Name the question you need answered
“What is using resources now?” and “Has that background job stayed busy?” are different questions. One suits an immediate inspection; the other requires observation over time. Decide which problem you have before choosing a tool.
Activity Monitor has CPU history and several resource views. QuietWatch brings sustained CPU observation, source clues and manual actions together for current-user tasks. It cannot replace every system-monitoring feature.

When Activity Monitor is a good starting point
If your Mac occasionally feels slow and you need to distinguish CPU pressure from another resource issue, begin with Activity Monitor. Its Memory view includes memory pressure and swap usage, for example. These address a broader question about system memory than one application’s MB count.
If you already know which application is unresponsive and need to handle a single incident, you do not need another utility just for that. Resource views narrow the investigation; the cause may still require logs or a profiler.
When continuous observation is useful
If several projects, tests and scripts stay open in the background, it can be easy to forget one. QuietWatch samples every 30 seconds by default and alerts when a task meets a configured threshold for long enough. The first sample establishes a baseline, and observation restarts after sleep or a pause. Enable notifications in Settings and allow macOS notification permission for system alerts; by default, findings appear only inside the app.
Source labels can reduce the work of matching a process to a task, but they are clues derived from available information. QuietWatch only accesses readable processes owned by the current user and does not cover all of Activity Monitor’s system views. It does not detect memory leaks or temperature, disk, network and GPU anomalies.
Keep the decision tied to your work
Whichever tool you use, high CPU does not automatically justify stopping a task. QuietWatch never ends tasks automatically: requesting an exit and force stopping each need confirmation. Its local observation and rules do not require AI.
If you enable AI advice, review the destination and actual summary before deciding to send each request. AI receives no raw commands, paths, PIDs, source code or logs and cannot act on processes. The selected service’s policies govern its handling of the summary.
Start with your existing habits
For occasional troubleshooting, learn Activity Monitor first. If you repeatedly forget background work, add a sustained observation rule. After a QuietWatch alert, return to Activity Monitor for a broader view. Alert counts do not measure success; recognizing unnecessary work sooner matters more.
QuietWatch targets macOS 13 or later, with an interface currently in Chinese. It does not automatically speed up a Mac or promise a particular performance or battery-life improvement.
